Rural Roots Engineering & Design served as the lead engineering firm and project manager for Atlantic Poultry Inc., overseeing the transformation of a former cannabis facility into one of Nova Scotia’s largest and most advanced broiler chick hatcheries. This landmark project combined biosecure hatchery design, controlled-environment agriculture principles, and strategic reuse of existing infrastructure to create a high-output, energy-smart poultry production facility.
Atlantic Poultry’s goal was ambitious: create a modern hatchery capable of producing large volumes of healthy chicks while upholding the highest standards of animal welfare, biosecurity, and operational efficiency.
Our Work Included:
• Optimized Infrastructure Reuse: We adapted the existing building shell, drainage systems, ventilation network, electrical service, and backup generators, significantly reducing both construction costs and environmental impact.
• Specialized Hatchery Equipment Integration: Partnering with Jamesway Incubator Company for the incubators and Innovatec Automation for the processing line, we coordinated one of Canada’s largest installations of its kind at the time, integrating equipment from multiple suppliers into a unified operational system.
• Biosecure Layout & Product Flow: Our team developed a hatchery layout with clearly defined clean and dirty zones, optimizing chick movement, staff access, and process flow to minimize contamination risk.
• Regulatory Compliance & Approvals: We guided the client through the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA) approval process and ensured compliance with all provincial building, environmental, and operational regulations.
• Construction & Commissioning Leadership: Working closely with the general contractor and trades, we identified opportunities to redesign and repurpose equipment, improving project economics and accelerating timelines without compromising quality.
The completed hatchery is now the largest broiler chick facility in Nova Scotia, delivering exceptional chick quality while maintaining operational efficiency. Equipped with energy-efficient poultry incubation technology and designed for long-term biosecurity, the facility serves as a benchmark for sustainable poultry infrastructure in Atlantic Canada. By leveraging controlled-environment agriculture strategies, Rural Roots helped Atlantic Poultry achieve consistent production results while reducing resource consumption and setting a new standard for the industry.
