Curtmar Meats

Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia
Overview:

After years in the cattle trade, Curtis Moxsom recognized a gap in local meat processing options around Shubenacadie. He purchased a long-closed abattoir with the vision of revitalizing it into a fully operational, family-run facility. But what he inherited was more than just a building — it needed major structural upgrades and a complete restart on food safety and environmental permits.

About The Project:

Rural Roots responded quickly, partnering closely with both the Curtmar team and provincial inspectors to navigate the complexities of reopening a facility under today’s regulatory standards. From structural renovations to waste treatment system upgrades, we worked hands-on to ensure the site met all compliance requirements, without delaying the project’s timeline.

Our involvement bridged engineering precision with practical problem-solving, ensuring the facility was not just compliant, but future-ready.

Result & Impact:

Today, Curtmar Meats operates as a newly revived abattoir, serving local producers and contributing to regional food security. The project demonstrates how thoughtful engineering and responsive project management can breathe new life into aging rural infrastructure.

It’s another example of how Rural Roots helps agri-businesses transform potential into production — with compliance, sustainability, and local impact in mind.
