Dickey Street Apartments

Amherst, Nova Scotia
Overview:

Rural Roots teamed up with SRHI to transform five aging apartment buildings on Dickey Street in Amherst, NS. Once damaged and abandoned, the buildings underwent major structural repairs, including fire restoration, a new pitched roof, redesigned suites, and updated mechanical and electrical systems—reviving a key part of the community.

About The Project:

Once a row of neglected apartment buildings and townhouses bordering the historic Dickey Brook, this site had become a symbol of decline. Originally constructed between the late 1960s and early 1970s, the buildings had suffered years of deterioration, multiple break-ins, and two major fires that left the largest structure—15 Dickey—uninhabitable.

Rural Roots partnered with new property owner SRHI to bring these buildings back to life. Our scope included extensive structural remediation to restore the fire-damaged wood framing and partially collapsed sections, along with the strategic demolition and reconstruction of key areas.

Result & Impact:

To ensure long-term integrity and improved functionality, we designed and installed a new pitched roof, re imagined the basement suite layouts, and oversaw the full upgrade of all mechanical and electrical systems. The result: a revitalized housing complex that’s structurally sound, modernized, and ready to serve the community once again.
