Merks Poultry Farm New Barns

Avonport, Nova Scotia
Overview:

Merks Poultry Farm Limited, a leading poultry and egg producer based in Nova Scotia’s Annapolis Valley, was expanding operations across the region. To support their growth, they brought in Rural Roots to design five new production facilities — including breeder barns, pullet barns, and modern two-storey broiler barns.

About The Project:

As agricultural engineers, we worked closely with the Merks team to evaluate multiple construction approaches — balancing performance, cost, and long-term efficiency. Our collaboration ensured the designs met both production goals and regulatory requirements, all while being tailored to the specific needs of each site.

From layout optimization to material selection, every decision was made with the goal of maximizing both animal welfare and operational flow.

Result & Impact:

The result was a suite of well-planned, future-ready facilities that support Merks’ commitment to quality production and sustainable farming. Our work helped streamline their growth — setting a strong foundation for efficient, compliant, and scalable poultry operations in the Annapolis Valley.

This project highlights Rural Roots’ strength in agricultural facility design that meets the demands of modern farming without losing sight of local context.
